FAQs: Waste management

Waste management is required for businesses of all sizes to help with their waste and recycling challenges, aiming to save them time and money to improve their overall performance.

Because every project, site, or location comes with its own unique set of waste management challenges, our service offering is exceptionally broad. Thanks to our nationwide supply chain network, we can procure almost anything you can think of relating to waste and resource management to help you make your way up the waste hierarchy.

Waste management refers to the activities involved in collecting, destroying, and disposing of waste. This includes waste materials such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, and organic matter. Other terms for waste management include waste disposal, garbage disposal, and recycling.

You may hear some refer to waste management in 5 types, which have been adapted over the years, but we use the principles of the waste hierarchy in all our tailored plans. The waste hierarchy principles we adopt in our customers’ waste management plans are Prevention, Re-use, Recycle, Recover, and Dispose. You can find the full breakdown of this methodology below.

For businesses, waste management costs tend to be varied depending on the size of the requirements and are often negotiated based on factors such as the volume and type of waste generated, frequency of collection, and if there are any special collections required for hazardous items.

A typical waste management system can vary across sectors, but a typical system is responsible for the following:

  • Collection
  • Transportation
  • Processing
  • Recycling (if possible)
  • Disposal (if waste can’t be reused or recycled)
  • Monitoring of legislation that could impact activity

Workplace recycling guide: Welsh businesses

We have launched a guide – Separated Waste Collections for Workplaces: Reconomy guide – to support our partners their preparation for incoming workplace waste management reforms.

It is part of the Welsh government’s ‘Beyond Recycling’ strategy with the nation aiming to become zero waste by 2050 and recycle 70% of all waste generated by 2025.

Reconomy has released this guide to help you comply with the regulations as failure to do so is an offence with no upper limit on the courts’ power to fine. A civil sanction may be issued in place of prosecution.
