ASOS

ASOS turned to Valpak, a Reconomy specialist brand, to manage its growing international packaging compliance obligations and take on the administrative burden of data collection and submission across multiple territories.

By establishing ASOS’s obligations market by market and then outsourcing data management to Valpak’s specialist teams, ASOS gained confidence in its overseas compliance while freeing up significant in-house resources as the business continued to grow.

The challenge

A company experiencing rapid growth and expansion, ASOS became obligated under an increasing volume of legislation, including Packaging Waste, WEEE, and Waste Batteries regulations in the UK, the EU, and worldwide.

With operations in so many countries, ASOS faced a wide variety of compliance obligations and data requirements. And because each country implements producer responsibility regulations differently, navigating those obligations market by market was a significant undertaking.

The data workload compounded the challenge. With many new product lines introduced each week and monthly sales data growing year on year, meeting these obligations in-house would have meant dedicating a large amount of internal resource to analysing a full year’s worth of data.

The solution

ASOS turned to Valpak’s International Compliance team, who began by establishing the company’s obligations across all of its markets through an Obligation Assessment. Once that research was complete, Valpak registered ASOS with compliance schemes where necessary and helped the business offset its overseas obligations for waste compliance.

With obligations established across Europe, ASOS recognised that outsourcing data collection and submission to a specialist partner would be the most cost-effective solution, rather than committing significant internal resource to the task. Valpak took on that administrative burden through its International Data Solutions service.

The benefits

Outsourcing the administrative burden of international compliance has given ASOS confidence in its overseas compliance as it continues to expand and develop.

Obligated to make almost 200 submissions across multiple territories every year, ASOS relies on Valpak’s International Data Solutions to ensure accurate and timely data submissions. The service ensures ASOS is fully compliant with Packaging Waste, WEEE, and Waste Batteries legislation in the UK and across other European countries.

The partnership delivers:

  • Regular communication with experienced, knowledgeable compliance staff.
  • Significant time and resource savings.
  • Increased accuracy of submissions.
  • The removal of administrative burdens, freeing the ASOS team to focus on growth.
