Reconomy adds voice to calls for nations gathered in Geneva to finally conclude ambitious global plastics treat
Reconomy, the leading international circular economy specialist, announces that it has become a signatory to Defra’s statement, alongside leading businesses across the plastics value chain, calling on nations meeting at the sixth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee in Geneva to agree an ambitious treaty addressing the full lifecycle of plastics.
The statement acknowledges the critical role of the private sector in addressing the root causes of plastic pollution. It urges members of the committee to establish consistent and harmonised regulatory frameworks and to set clear global standards. This is key to unlocking funding and investment into infrastructure for the collection, reuse and recycling of plastic products.
This is the sixth time negotiators have met since talks began and it is widely seen as the last opportunity to reach a deal, following the collapse of the previous round of talks in November 2024. The INC was established back in March 2022 following a UN resolution adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.

Diane Crowe, Group Sustainability Director at Reconomy, said:
With representatives from 184 countries gathered in Geneva for the sixth round of talks, this is an historic moment to finally conclude a comprehensive treaty to tackle plastic pollution. There is a growing sense of urgency to act with rising plastic pollution harming the planet’s biodiversity and contributing to climate change. We are proud to stand alongside other leading businesses across the plastics value chain that recognise the vital role of the private sector to cut plastic waste, lower carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
