Waste Segregation - Crest Nicholson

The Former Linton Hospital site, for Government Key Worker homes, was a flagship development for Crest Nicholson, operating under the scheme pioneered by John Prescott to develop £60,000 homes for key workers.

Reconomy Solutions, then called Wastefile UK, were involved with the scheme from site start up in March 2007, implementing a waste management scheme with full segregation, and organising regular on site meetings for review.

Waste from the site was fully segregated into the following streams:

  • Recycling of Office Paper/Cardboard Packaging/Timber Waste/Scrap
    Metal Waste
  • Inert Waste (100% reused on site)
  • Wastes deemed Hazardous by EWC
  • Plasterboard (supplier take back scheme)
  • Compactable Active Waste (cost effective disposal)
  • Non-compactable Active Waste (waste not covered elsewhere)

In addition to the provision of waste management, the site also benefitted from the following Reconomy Solutions services:

Regular Site Visits: Regional Account Managers have attended the site regularly to ensure that the scheme designed by Reconomy Solutions is working effectively for the site management.

Timely & Relevant Reporting of Waste movement data: The site was monitored by the Sustainability Consultants Faithful & Gould, and Reconomy Solutions reported (with consent from the site manager) data on total volumes & weights of the waste moved from site, facilitating the compilation of reports for WRAP to monitor.  This reporting was described as "invaluable" by Faithful & Gould, and "labour saving" by the site manager (who would otherwise have to collate this data from the waste transfer tickets and cross reference these to the invoice to obtain the weights of the waste movements).

Full Audit Compliance service: Reconomy Solutions were able to provide a full audit statement of all wastes moved from the site under our responsibility when requested by the Crest Nicholson SE buying team. Copies were also provided to the site manager, and the Crest Nicholson SE surveying team.

On-Site Training & Monitoring: Toolbox talks to facilitate the implementation of the waste management scheme. Regular site visits to check all is OK with the site's waste management scheme, and that the various service providers used on site are delivering a service in accordance with the agreed KPI's.

Cost Saving: In addition to maximising the volume of waste recycled, the introduction of the Reconomy Solutions segregation system as demonstrated well on this site, generated savings in the region of £231 per plot, which equated to a £32,340 saving. Crest Nicholson's company benchmark per 1000ft for 2007 was £425, inclusive of inert waste. However on this project 100% of inert waste was reused on site, surpassing the company benchmark. No segregation would have equated to £600 per plot (i.e. 4x mixed waste skips at £150 each).
