Marks & Spencers Plan A - Journey to Zero to Landfill

A pre-start meeting was held at Marks & Spencers store in Tamworth in February 2008, to discuss remodel and development works to the current store, and the development works of the adjoining building to create a singular large Marks and Spencer retail unit.

WB projects, the Contractor, had been tasked by Marks and Spencer to achieve 90% recycling of all waste produced during works, as part of their overall Plan A strategy they launched in January 2007. Marks and Spencer paid particular attention to detail on this project, due to the eventual size of the store and its environmental impact. This focused Marks and Spencer and WB projects on the performance of Reconomy Solutions, then called Wastefile UK, not just with service but support with environmental issues and reporting the achievements to meet the 90% diversion to landfill target.

Reconomy Solutions were therefore tasked not only with the removal of waste from site but to also guarantee the levels of recycling of each waste type, minimise the carbon footprint by utilising local suppliers and provide accurate waste reporting to aid with the management of a site waste management plan.

Aims and Objectives

To achieve 90% Recycling of all waste removed from the development.

To minimise the impact on the local environment, through effective waste management and segregation, and selection of local waste contractors to reduce carbon footprint.

To provide viable recycling options for specified segregated waste types, including wood waste, metal waste, inert waste, Vinyl flooring, hazardous waste etc.

To produce accurate cost and tonnage reports on a regular monthly basis to assist WB projects and Marks and Spencer in the completion and monitoring of the Site Waste Management Plan and Smart Waste reporting.

To provide site with on site and off site support with waste management strategies, service of containers and provision of all reporting information.

Method and Results

Reconomy Solutions produced a detailed plan for the removal of segregated waste from the development, providing recycling options for all applicable waste types and sourced local suppliers to remove waste to limit the impact on the carbon footprint. The waste types and recycling options are listed below.

Metal - recycled through local transfer station. 100% recovered and recycled.

MDF and Chipboard - sent to local transfer station, segregated and chipped for energy recovery.

Inert Waste - recycled through local transfer station. 100% recovered and recycled.
