BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract to construct a sustainable public transport system for the city of Cambridge. This involved fabricating concrete guided ladder beams on site to strategically position along 26km of disused rail corridors.
Project Description
Vendor accord partner Reconomy Solutions worked in partnership with BAM Nuttall to manage waste removal from the project efficiently and effectively. Reconomy were involved from the start of the project in January 2007, implementing a waste management scheme with full segregation, regular site visits and detailed reporting on waste material removed from site including percentages of waste diverted from landfill for recycling. The main aim was to divert as much waste as possible from landfill by utilising segregated containers for the individual waste streams across the strategically placed waste compounds along the length of the project.
Environmental & Compliance Impact
This was carried out by local companies from Reconomy's database of certified suppliers which kept the carbon footprint and cost to a minimum. BAM Nuttall also received a full duty of care pack collated and sent directly to the site environment manager which detailed all waste streams generated form the site, details of the service providers and their registration and licence or permit details, the Annual Waste Transfer Notes (AWTN) Reconomy Solutions carrier & broker registration certificate, service providers carrier registration certificate for each one used on site along with the suppliers Licence, permit, or exemption for each.
BAM Nuttall benefited from 100% recycling on the fully segregated waste streams below along with a 75% - 80% figure on all the mixed construction waste to leave site.
- Clean Timber
- Brick & Rubble
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Metal
- Plastic
Cost
Cost savings were gained on site by;
- The use of compactable skips instead of mixed waste containers
- Segregation and monitoring of waste streams
- Saving on landfill tax due to recycling
- Alternative drainage material supplied
Innovation
Individual contracts were set up on Reconomy Solutions internal system to track every skip sitting and removal for ease of reporting and individualisation of material quantities.
Reconomy also supported BAM Nuttall in delivering value engineering to their client by sourcing a shredded tyre material as an alternative to 10mm gravel drainage material to infill the ladder beams along the tracks. Approximately 18,000 tonnes were required and generated significant cost savings compared to the virgin material first revealed as a natural product to suit. In addition, the solution provided an alternative disposal route for tyres, which are banned from landfill and prevented the use of virgin material conserving natural aggregate stocks eliminating the associated water and CO2 implications of quarrying.
