Reconomy Solutions, then called Wastefile UK were contracted by Mike Stacey Ltd to carry out the removal of contaminated soils from a petrol filling station site in Llandaff, South Wales.
Due to the clients programme of work and with space and time at a premium on the site the main objective was for the efficient and effective removal from site of the stockpiled contaminated material. The material had been previously excavated by Mike Stacey Ltd and stockpiled on site ready for removal. It was estimated by the client that the volume of the stockpiled material was in the region of 2,000m3.
A chemical analysis was provided that was subsequently analysed by our in-house engineer. The majority of the results were classified as inert; however, one sample location was slightly impacted with hydrocarbons. Due to the material being stockpiled the classification of the material was deemed as Non-Hazardous in accordance with the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
In view of the limited number of landfill sites in the vicinity, and the load restrictions of these options, our knowledge of the industry was utilised to source a soil treatment facility in nearby Rumney, Cardiff that was licensed to take non-hazardous material. The soil treatment facility was approximately 30 minutes journey, enabling each wagon to achieve 8 loads per day; subsequently reducing transport costs and improving the efficiency of each wagon by 100%. In comparison to disposal to landfill we were also able to reduce our costs to Mike Stacey Ltd for removing the material from site.
Reconomy Solutions deployed a Site Engineer to supervise the works and evaluate the exact quantities involved and subsequently organise the transport to complete the job efficiently. In order to maximise the efficiency of the wagons and taking into consideration the proposed number of vehicles on site a 30-tonne tracked excavator was deployed to load the material together with an experienced operator. A total of 131 loads were removed from site over a 2-day period with each wagon running to maximum efficiency. The customer had allowed 4-days for the removal exercise within their PoW resulting in a valuable saving of 2-days.
