Reconomy Solutions, then called Wastefile UK were contracted by Black & Veatch Ltd to carry out the removal of contaminated soils from Ashford Treatment Works in Kent.
The main objective was for the efficient and effective removal from site of the stockpiled contaminated material. The material had been previously excavated by Black & Veatch and stockpiled on site ready for removal. A chemical analysis was provided that was subsequently analysed by our in-house engineer and verified by the Principal Engineering Geologist at Black & Veatch. The results showed that significant contamination was present within the materials which were subsequently classified as Non Hazardous.
As part of the service, Reconomy Solutions deployed a Site Manager to Ashford STW for the duration of the project which was undertaken over a period of 67 days between May and October 2007 whose responsibilities were as follows: -
- Ensure requisite vehicle were present on site
- Direct and co-ordinate the vehicle movements within the site
- Ensure site Health & Safety rules were adhered to.
- Ensure vehicles were loaded to capacity to reduce the number of vehicle movements.
- On site segregation of recyclable materials
- Ensure Duty of Care documentation is completed correctly.
During the contract period a total of 8650 tonne of contaminated Non-hazardous soils was removed from the site via 8 wheel tipper lorries that were loaded on site with a 20 tonne excavator. The project was completed in accordance with the Program of Works set by the client.
Contaminated soils must be disposed of correctly at a licensed landfill to comply with the regulation set by the environment agency. Reconomy Solutions expertise enabled Black & Veatch to benefit from signifcant cost savings of £48,998.50.
